Book Review Wednesday! I know that this isn’t “on topic” but I’m having the absolute best time reviewing these books. If you haven’t already, sign up to be a book reviewer at Thomas Nelson.
My middle daughter, YL12 (almost YL13!) is forever and always BORED. She has come in from a full day at an amusement park and been in a room full of her friends that were sleeping over and still looked to me with a pained expression and lamented “Momma, I’m BORED.”
Last week, my new book from Thomas Nelson came in the mail for me to read and review. Before I could get to it that evening, YL12 held it up and said “Momma, can I read this?” … then the pause… “because, I’m already on page 14.” Now, even if I wasn’t too busy to pick the book up immediately, I’d never ever turn down a child’s request to read a book. Learning and reading are so important in our house… and if I do say so
myself… should be in EVERY house.
ANYWAY…
The book is House of Dark Shadows by Robert Liparulo. The story line is very alluring to the tween/teen age set. There is enough intrigue to keep them hooked and a twist at the end that my YL12 loved. I am very impressed with the writing, not only in the engaging story line for the target demographic, but also the fact that my daughter told me over and over again that she really loved that the book contained so many of her vocabulary words from this semester (7th grade Advanced Placement) and that helped her visualize the story as she read.
By the time she finished reading the 304 page book (in less than 4 days) she and her sisters, aged 10 and 15, were all engrossed in conversations about the plot, the characters, and specific scenes throughout the book. Now there is a waiting list to borrow the book. YL12’s friends at school are even asking their parents for their own copy for Christmas.
All in all, House Of Dark Shadows was a smashing success at Momma’s House.

Hey! Thanks for the kind words about my book. I’m glad your daughter liked it. If she’s interested, there’s a weekly trivia contest about the Dreamhouse Kings stories on my blog . She can win t-shirts and gift cards by entering, and kids are having a lot of fun with it.
Take care,
Robert

Robert,
You’re very welcome. I have a feeling you’ve got a whole set of new fans! We have 5 daughters and they have a ton of teen/tween friends. They are having a blast with the first book and I’ve already gotten my marching orders for more. Thanks to you and Thomas Nelson for the chance to review your book.

I’ll have to pick up a copy of this book. It’s right up my 12-year-old daughter’s alley, too!
