Age Old Grocery Debate – Generic or Name Brand

by Momma · 6 comments

I was spending some quality time on twitter this morning… or catching up on my distractions (tomato tomahto)… when I spotted a link to this interesting YouTube video, posted by Elizabeth of Table for Five.

Every once in a while, the Generic Vs. Name Brand debate kicks up and makes the rounds on the ‘net.  I find that my opinions on grocery shopping and whether to buy name brands have changed drastically over the last few years.  Once upon a time, I only purchased generics for just about everything.

When NOT to buy generics:

Since I got started with The Grocery Game (THANKS LISA!), I don’t buy generics when the name brand costs less than the generic.  Trust me, this DOES happen.  Often times, the name brand items go on sale for at or near the same price as the store brand.  Paired with a coupon, you can often find name brands for a LOT less than the generic.

Coupon or not … sale or not… there are some things I simply will not purchase the generic versions of.  Toilet paper is at the top of that list.  End of discussion.  Coffee is another.  This list is different for everyone, but I’m willing to bet that everyone has at least one.

When TO buy generics:

I buy generics when the things I need are

  • not on sale
  • not cheaper with a coupon
  • I know the generic is of the same quality as the name brand

That’s it.  No rocket science here.

What about you?  Do you buy store brands or name brands?  Why?

I refuse to buy generic OJ. I’m with you on the TP too, it’s one of the few things I insist on one particular brand.

I refuse to purchase generic cotton swabs – there’s just not enough cotton on them for me. I stick with Q-Tips.

Have you tried that grocery game, I am kind of interested in knocking out a huge chunk of my grocery bill. How did it work for you?
Thanks

@Clayton – Actually, I’ve been using them as part of my overall plan for about a year and a half. I’ve written an entire coupon system that actually evolved because I started using The Grocery Game.
